For those people who know that they love research (despite the numerous failures that will often be involved), pursuing a PhD is suitable—as was for me. An assistant professor appointment means taking on teaching and research responsibilities but does not necessarily have the authority to lead or supervise graduate students. They typically teach one course per semester and have smaller courses with fewer students; however, this depends entirely on departmental policies.

I obtained my PhD in Nanotechnology Engineering at the University of Waterloo in about three years. In addition, the type of university setting may have a significant influence. The possibilities to negotiate a higher salary in a state-funded college of liberal arts or a privately funded school for economics may vary substantially. If you plan to apply for professor positions outside of the US, it is essential to understand that it is often challenging to translate the title of professor positions from another academic system and from another language into the US terminology. A successful candidate may transition to a permanent professorship position.

(   Convertible Instructor

Persons receiving such appointments are expected to comply with all University policies pertaining to full-time positions unless otherwise clearly indicated in the letter of appointment. A distinction is also made between full-time and part-time appointments. Full-time appointees are expected to give full-time service and allegiance to the University. No right of Tenure accrues to any person holding a part-time position regardless of title, rank, or cumulative length of service. The duties of and terms and conditions for part-time faculty shall be articulated in each letter of appointment.

It is an opportunity to diversify your skillset and to build your network. A postdoctoral experience involves research in a lab that’s different from your graduate school lab for about two to seven years (depending on your field). At the universities that have changed over, it was a direct substitution for the title Lecturer (everyone who was Lecturer became assistant professor). The “of the practice” suffix applies to a distinguished practitioner who through teaching shares his or her knowledge and experience in the profession. The prefix “Clinical” is used for certain faculty engaged in clinical settings with students. The teaching, supervising, and mentoring provided by clinical faculty is directly related to the practicum of the students’ programs. Such positions may be part-time or full-time, including short-term appointments or longer-term renewable positions. At Denison, visiting professors may be here for a number of reasons, typically to address staffing needs. For example, a department may need to cover the difference between assistant professor and associate professor teaching responsibilities of a faculty member who is on leave from their teaching duties. Both Lecturers and Instructors typically hold advanced graduate/professional degrees. The term «professor» as a common noun is often used for persons holding any kind of faculty position. In academic medicine, Instructor usually denotes someone who has completed residency, fellowship, or other post-doctoral (M.D./D.O.) training but who is not tenure-track faculty.

Open positions are often but not always posted on the department website. Typically, you’ll be asked to supply a CV, references, various statements describing your objectives, teaching philosophy and research interests, and possibly a teaching demonstration video. A lecturer appointment is a teaching position, almost never comes with tenure, and does not necessarily require PhD, though it does usually require a master’s at minimum.
